Brooks studies maritime & colonial history, also archaeological and paper conservation, drawing upon a love of both science and history. His focus is North Carolina history and, of course, pirates! He also published non-fiction such as Pirates & Slaves, Captain James Wimble, Brunswick Town & Wilmington. He has published twice in the North Carolina Historical Review, one of the articles being republished as a pamphlet by North Carolina Historical Publications as "Blackbeard Reconsidered: Mist's Piracy, Thache's Genealogy." He is currently working on a 600+ paged book re-evaluating the life of Edward Thache, titled "Quest for Blackbeard," to be announced this summer!
